THE CHALLENGE
As part of its improvements and development, the Oykel Bridge Hotel wanted to upgrade its septic tank to a commercial sewage treatment plant.
According to the regulations, the ammonia concentration for this application must reach a dilution level of 5mg/l in order to minimize the risk of pollution to local waterways. As a non-departmental public body the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) ensures that the environment and human health are protected. For this reason, sustainable economic development in Scotland relies on the sustainable management of a range of natural resources and services. Wastewater treatment plants are typically treated to a standard, typically 20 times cleaner than septic tanks.
The Installation
Moray Munro, the contractor had previously installed several of our domestic sized plants through Highland Plumbing and Heating Supplies – a merchant in Tain.
The Tricel Maxus is a commercial sewage treatment plant that uses a Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) system. All electrical components of the plant are connected to the control panel E-III. They are easy to install & provide a variety of configuration options to suit any site. It is also simple to use and maintain. The system is designed to deal with wastewater generated by human activity in applications exceeding 50 Population Equivalent (PE).
In order to ensure that the plant was designed and specified to meet the needs of the hotel, we sized a 92PE Tricel Maxus sewage treatment plant system with a buffer tank to meet an ammonia level of 5mg/L.
As the pumps on the tank work with the flow, energy costs are also reduced during off-peak seasons. Tricel Maxus sewage treatment plants are designed to handle seasonal loads as well as constant loads. Automatic optimization of the control panel will be performed based on the amount of incoming loads and the effluent strength.
In the clarifier, the bio sludge from the treatment process settles. Thanks to the airlift pumps, the bio sludge from the bottom of the tank is recirculated back to the settlement tank. After the liquid has been fully treated, it is now ready for discharge.
As the wastewater passes through the biological treatment zone, the submerged aerated filter (with a large surface area for microbes) is aerated. Due to the adjustments made by the control panel, the aeration is matched to the incoming flow for efficient operation.
