WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS

sewage treatment products to avoid in your treatment plant

OVERVIEW

Before detailing the sewage treatment products for your system to avoid , it is important to know that poor wastewater treatment performance of a sewage system is not exclusively related to the use of household products. It can also come from :

  • Poor condition
  • Under-sizing system
  • Lack of maintenance

The factors above can also be the cause.

The good performance of your device requires a reasonable use of maintenance products.

How does a wastewater treatment system work?

Before talking about the how and why you should be cautious with your wastewater treatment plant, let’s go back to the fundamentals.

We explain below how our wastewater treatment plant, the Tricel Novo, works. It constitute itself of three different chambers and three different stages, all essential for water purification.

Stage 1: the primary settlement chamber

Anaerobic breakdown takes place in the primary settlement chamber. It will separate the liquid from the solids and allow them to drop to the bottom.

Stage 2: the aeration chamber

In this next stage of wastewater treatment, we involve again an aerobic breakdown. Masses of naturally occurring bacteria inhabit a specially designed filter media. They will help to purify the sewage. They are sustained with air, that a pump continuously supplies in the unit’s top section. Whenever the liquid goes into the filter media, the bacteria feed on the sewage and eliminate it from the soon-to-be treated water.

Stage 3: final settlement chamber

If some sludge is carried into the final settlement chamber, it will settle to the bottom of it while the liquid is getting ready to pass out of the Tricel system. From there, a continuous sludge return system pumps the solids back to the primary settlement chamber.

Reminder about your sewage treatment system

It is important to keep in mind that a sewage treatment system uses a biological purification process. Microscopic living organisms, present in large numbers in the sewage system, eliminate the pollution:

The Tricel Novo has microorganisms that need air (electricity as supplied by a pump) and food to grow and breed. They are ensuring the high quality of your effluents, so it is your responsibility to keep them ‘alive’. If you accidently destroy the microorganisms, it will take them 3-6 weeks to repopulate themselves. In the meantime, there may be a slight odour coming from your plant as it cannot work to its optimum. You might also need to desludge your plant and clean it entirely to restart a fresh new population.

Cleaning products to avoid in your sewage treatment system

We do not recommend many household products for houses connected to a sewage treatment system.

The proper functioning of the system requires the maintenance of its bacterial flora. We do not recommend to use certain household products such as

  • Disinfectants
  • Bleach-based antibacterial products
  • You must use with moderation products containing this active ingredient, without exceeding the doses admissible by the bacteria. By respecting these doses, weekly use is without danger for your installation.

If you are lost,  look at The European Union clear pictograms that you can find on the label of your household products.

Is your detergent harmful to your sewage treatment system?

First, some liquids you should not pour into your device.
As said previously, bacteria are essential to the proper functioning of your system and some products we present beside are harmful to the development of bacteria.

  • Flammable substances and liquids
  • Substances hazardous to the aquatic environment
  • Fats and oils: you can dispose of small quantities of fats and oils in your household waste bin. Your local waste disposal centre can recycle larger quantities.
  • Clear water should never be allowed to flow into your wastewater treatment system. Too much clear water would lead to untreated wastewater being discharged into the sewerage system or the natural environment. This “clear water” is free of organic matter. It does not require any special treatment.

Materials

Then you should not put the following materials in your drain :

  • Non-biodegradable items such as plastics, cardboard packaging, condoms, tampons, cigarette butts, sanitary towels, cleaning wipes, etc. should not be thrown down the drain, as they may clog the pipes.
  • Medicines contain active substances that interfere with the proper functioning of your sewage system. Medicines should not be poured down your drains; pharmacies are able to collect them. They can be easily recycled by taking them to the nearest pharmacy.
  • Waxes and resins, including natural resins, should not be poured down your drain. They solidify and clog your pipes. In the treatment process, they reduce the oxygen supply to the bacteria.
  • Soil should not be put into your pipes because it is not very biodegradable. Bacteria cannot consume soil and it accumulates at the bottom of the tank. The increase in the level of sludge leads to an increase in the frequency of emptying.
Products to avoid in your sewage treatment system

The presentation of these product families allows you to optimise the treatment of your sewage treatment system and thus save money while respecting the environment.

Alternative cleaning products for your sewage treatment system

We recommend to use products that are suitable for septic tanks and other non-collective sanitation systems. You shoudl use household cleaning products that are environmentally friendly.

For example, you can replace bleach with white vinegar, an excellent descaler and antibacterial.

For hygiene products (shampoo, cosmetics, etc.), favour ecological, natural and easily biodegradable products that respect the environment and the health of users.

You can, for example, use toilet paper that is more easily biodegradable.

Septics Direct

On SepticsDirect website you will be able to order a range of organic septic tank maintenance products like the SeaChem products. We specifically design them to give your septic tank a natural boost and replenish the bacteria which grows in your tank to break down effluent.

These products will keep your septic tank healthy and can help reduce odours which can stem from a malfunctioning septic tank.
