SEWAGE TREATMENT

Consent to discharge NI

OVERVIEW

To install a septic tank or sewage treatment plant in Northern Ireland, it is mandatory to have:

  • planning permission
  • a building control inspection
  • and a consent to discharge form (W02) from the Northern Ireland Environmental Agency (NIEA)

Be sure you have a consent to discharge in place BEFORE you buy any property or BEFORE you start construction on your site, regardless of the type of tank you will need.

You can get help from our distributor in Northern Ireland (Depawater) with completing your consent to discharge form or do it yourself on the Domestic Consents website from the Department of Agricultural, Environment and Rural Affairs.

Percolation Area & Wastewater Treatment Options

The NIEA still requires a consent to discharge form even if your septic tank or sewage tank was installed before January 1, 2015.

If a septic tank discharges directly to a watercourse, it needs to be upgraded immediately, and failure to do so will result in prosecution. More information is available in the General Building Rules for Septic Tanks.

Since a consent to discharge approval form is an essential part of the planning permission process, your architect may have taken care of this already. If they have not, or if you need help with the process, we are happy to help.

The consent application forms can be filled in by Tricel’s distributor in Northern Ireland: Depawater Ltd.

The Northern Ireland Environmental Agency (NIEA) requires an application fee. This fee is dependent on the chosen discharge option:

  • Discharge to subsurface irrigation (soakaway) – £117
  • Discharge to waterway – £292

Consent to discharge in Northern Ireland

How to complete a Consent to Discharge (W02 Form) in Northern Ireland.

First, you need to know…

Do you discharge to a waterway or a soakaway?

Before filling out the consent form, determine whether your plant will discharge into a subsurface irrigation system (soakaway) or a waterway. The type of wastewater treatment system you choose will directly depend on this information.

See below our flowchart.

How to choose the most suitable type of sewage treatment system for you?

If you can’t connect your new residence to the main sewer line, you will need to use off-mains or stand-alone solutions.

Here are some options:

Tricel Vento 12

Standard Septic Tank

There should be approximately 100 metres of drainage field after a standard septic tank. A percolation test and NIEA approval are required.

Recommendation: Tricel Vento

Tricel Novo 95 BOD NI

95% BOD Sewage Treatment Plant

Installation of this option is possible with approximately 80-100 square meters of drainage field to the underground soakaway. A percolation test and NIEA approval are required.

Recommendation: Tricel Novo

Novo consent to discharge

97.5% BOD Sewage Treatment Plant

This option is available where final effluent can be piped directly into a watercourse (open ditch with water, stream or river) with approval from the NIEA. This option does not require a percolation test.
