WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
Septic tank replacement cost
OVERVIEW
The septic tank replacement cost usually involves many different factors. If buying a package sewage treatment unit to replace your old system seems rather expensive at first, it is essential to remember that in the long term it will be highly beneficial.
When you install such a system you protect the environment as the sewage you will be discharging will have been previously treated sufficiently. The usage of a sewage treatment plan also prevents virus and other diseases to spread via water surfaces.
Finally, by doing so, you will avoid receiving any fines from the Environmental Agency if your old tank is not compliant with the current enforced standards.
To help you better budget the upgrade of your sewage treatment system due to the new 2020 septic tanks regulations, we explain in detail below what this involves and the cost.

1.The price of the sewage treatment plant
The septic tank replacement cost or a sewage treatment plant will vary according to multiple variables. First and foremost, it depends on the size of the tank in terms of person equivalent (PE). To determine PE, you use the code of practice rules as outlined in British Water “Flows and Loads – 4”. Doing so informs that we apply the calculation and depends on the number of bedrooms that your property has from a baseline of three.
For example, if you have a three-bedroom house, you will need a 5PE system. For every additional bedroom you are required to add another 1PE. Further factors on the unit price include any additional add-ons that you wish to add to the sewage treatment plant itself, such as extra ventilation.
2. The actual cost of installing sewage treatment plants
Our package sewage treatment plants are very lightweight, compact and designed with a shallow invert, simplifying transportation and logistics, which reduces cost. The installation is quicker and less workforce is needed.
Moreover, no concrete backfill will be required for installation on most sites saving up to €400 over lower quality GRP/plastic competitors. However, you still require a hole created in which to place the tank and then it requires commissioning. In certain instances, you may need a discharge permit if you don’t conform with the Environment Agency General Binding Rule, and this will require an application fee.
Furthermore, if you install a new sewage treatment system, you will more than likely require planning permission from the planning department of your local authority. You will also have to get a building regulations approval. Application fees will be set by your local Building Control Body. Getting these documents is essential to approve your building permit. Once it is done, the rest of the installation process will go smoothly.
3. The running costs: power supply
Most sewage treatment plants require a power source. This is normally not a very large supply but it needs to comply with the electrical codes that are in place in your town/city. The cost of running one Tricel sewage treatment plant is the same as running a single light bulb. It’s only for the aeration system (electric air blower) which ensures that the plant has a continuous fresh air supply to feed the bacteria treating the sewage.4. The maintenance service costs: desludging & regular checks
The maintenance costs of a Tricel sewage treatment plant is extremely low as is the running costs. Indeed, the materials used to manufacture our sewage treatment plants (SMC and ceramic for the diffuser) have unparalleled strength and toughness. Thus, our units can operate in harsh weather conditions with no defects. Furthermore, there is no moving parts or pumps in the plant ensuring consistent operation and minimal maintenance and repair costs.
Regular maintenance by the homeowner
Homeowners can themselves perform quick checks regularly:
- All vents should be checked to make sure they are not blocked or obscured.
- Ensure the air blower is working by listening for a gentle hum when standing beside the plant.
- Inspect pipework for blockages if necessary
Yearly maintenance by a qualified professional
A Tricel Novo plant will require a full annual check to guarantee the plant is still running correctly. During routine servicing, the following items are checked (if applicable):
- Sludge return
- Functionality of blower and/or pump
- Pump pressures
- Pump filters are replaced
- Pump Diaphragm
- Alarm
- Ventilation function tested
- Diffuser monitored to check for dispersion of air
- Tricel covers and locks
- Manifold adjusted
The cost of installing sewage treatment plants can seem substantial but by opting for this option, you are also preventing any pollution to the surrounding environment: water sources, protected areas, etc. because your sewage will be treated well enough to be discharged. At Tricel, we offer cost-effective solutions while saving the environment.
