THE CHALLENGE
A private homeowner needed to replace an outdated septic tank. The septic tank was discharging directly into a watercourse, which under the 2020 regulations in England and Wales is no longer permitted.

For this project, the mission was to decommission the existing and outdated septic tank and replace it with a new wastewater treatment plant.
The Installation

On this project we worked alongside BK Elson Groundwork Ltd. BK Elson specialises in a wide range of groundwork and related services in the Chester area.
The work included:
- Decommissioning and removal of the existing septic tank
Before starting this process the tank might require emptying/desludging.
- Installation of a new sewage treatment plant
A Tricel Novo UK10 gravity sewage system was put in place. This tank was selected because of its reliability, ease of installation (lightweight and shallow dig tank) and simplicity to maintain.
The sizing (10 PE which means 10 Population Equivalent) was determined by the number of bedrooms in the house. For more information about how to size a septic tank or wastewater treatment plant, have a look at our dedicated page. The Novo range is available up to 50 PE.
Finally, the need for a percolation area or drainage field depends on the ground. The ground will determine whether a soakaway is required or if it is possible to discharge to a nearby watercourse or ditch.
TRICEL SOLUTION
The Tricel Novo submerged aeration sewage treatment plant is suitable for domestic and light commercial or communal applications.
The plant offers its own treatment system while using simple proven fixed bed technology.
The Feedback
With minimal disturbance to the site and its surrounding areas, the upgrade of the old septic tank took a total of three days to complete. The homeowner was satisfied with the work done by BK Elson as well as the product supplied by Tricel.
